Necessary to develop a unique mechanism of Caspian Sea protection: Atyrau

ATYRAU. January 14. KAZINFORM /Andrey Sokolov/ An international conference on the issues of environmental and economic assessment of natural resources of Northwest Caspian Sea region in terms of market economy took place in Atyrau; Kazinform correspondent reports.

Scientists and environmental specialists from Kazakhstan and Russia took part in the conference. The participants discussed the problem of extension of oil operations in the Caspian Sea shelf that can make irreparable damage to its bio-resources estimated at many billions of dollars. That is why all coastal countries should immediately proceed to developing mechanism of protection of bio-resources of the sea. It is necessary to create a unique methodic of resources assessment and then accept programs of protection of the Caspian Sea from the influence of oil operations, including insurance commitments for the companies dealing with oil extraction in the shelf.
