New Asian Boxing Confederation established
World Boxing has officially announced the establishment of a new Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC), which will be responsible for the development and promotion of boxing in Asia, Kazinform News Agency cites the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Pichai Chunhavajira, who stepped down from the role of the President of the current ASBC following challenges in securing its independence from the International Boxing Association (IBA), has expressed his support for the establishment of the new organization and its future endeavors.
Boris van der Vorst, the President of World Boxing, described the decision as a historic moment.
“We are pleased to be taking this step towards expanding the opportunities for the sport in Asia. We are confident that the new ASBC will flourish and drive the sport in the region to new heights," he said.
The establishment of the ASBC has been met with considerable support from the World Boxing community. Gennady Golovkin, Chair of the World Boxing Olympic Commission, highlighted the significance of Asian boxing on the global stage.
"It is a distinct honor to contribute to the establishment of a pioneering structure. Asian boxing currently occupies a unique position on the world stage. The new confederation will strive to reinforce existing positions and provide a fresh impetus for the advancement of this sport in our region," he emphasized.
