New Generation For a Nuclear-Free World conference kicks off in Kurchatov
The conference is a key event in the program of the European delegation's visit to East Kazakhstan region. Members of the international organization Mayors for Peace started their visit to the testing area "Ground Zero" of the Semipalatinsk Test Site. Then the participants of the anti-nuclear forum familiarized with the experimental research stand "EAGLE", fusion reactor "Tokamak KTM", visited the Park of Nuclear Technologies and National Nuclear Center.
Headquarters of the representative of the Mayors for Peace Secretariat was opened in Semey on Friday.
The opening ceremony was attended by Ambassador of Norway Dag Halvorsen, Chairman of the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign Board of Directors, Mayor of Ypres Luc Dehaene, Kazakh Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and Luxembourg, Head of Kazakhstan's Mission to the EU and NATO Erik Utembayev, Acting Deputy Ambassador of the U.S. to KAzakhstan Jeffrey Sexton, Acting Head of Delegation of the European Union to Kazakhstan Hubert Petit, Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation Sergei Tarasenko and others.
Mayors for Peace is an international organization of cities, dedicated for the promotion of peace that was established in 1982 at the initiative of then mayor of Hiroshima Takeshi Araki.
