New laser system in Almaty brings cutting-edge eye surgery to local children
Kazakhstan is making strides in treating complex pediatric eye diseases with the introduction of advanced laser surgery technology. Using the cutting-edge Constellation Vision laser surgical technology, the Center for Pediatric Emergency Care in Almaty started doing operations for severe vitreoretinal diseases, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports citing the Ministry of Health.
This advancement marks a significant step in local healthcare, allowing children with challenging eye conditions to receive cutting-edge care without leaving the country. "From January to October of this year, 57 Kazakhstani children were forced to travel abroad for vitreoretinal surgeries. Thanks to the new equipment, parents will no longer have to look for funds for surgeries abroad," said Ayala Foundation President Aidan Suleimenova.
Vitreoretinal surgery addresses severe diseases of the retina and vitreous body, conditions that require highly specialized techniques. Acting Head of Almaty's Public Health Department, Nazgul Imangaliyeva said the newly furnished Almaty center will treat diseases like retinopathy of prematurity: “In the eye microsurgery department of the Children’s Emergency Medical Care Center of Almaty, our little patients will be able to undergo surgeries to treat retinopathy of prematurity, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, Coats’ retinitis and other serious eye diseases.”
Ali Smagulov, Director of the Pediatric Center, highlighted the urgent need for this technology: “Given the widespread use of gadgets, the problem of visual pathologies is becoming increasingly urgent, and laser vision correction is an important task in pediatric ophthalmology. The introduction of laser microsurgery at our Center will improve access to treatment and increase the professionalism of our specialists."
Children suffering similar diseases were formerly transported overseas under a quota. They will be able to get the required treatment in Almaty now.
