Kazakhstan was one of the last post-Soviet countries to withdraw from the rouble zone. In 1992 there was established a group of experts for the national currency development. The group consisted of renowned designers Mandybay Alin, Timur Suleimenov, agimsaly Duzelkhanov and Hairulla Gabzhalipov. They started their work from studying historical aspects of development of Kazakhstan culture. The word "tenge" originates from Turkic "tanga", "donga", "tenga". Russian word "dengi" was also borrowed from the Turkic language. The idea of giving the name of tenge to the national currency belongs to well-known Kazakhstan economist Sauk Takezhanov.

The national currency was developed in a year. However, Kazakhstan tenge is notable for high quality and strong safety level.
