NPP construction referendum kicks off in Kyrgyzstan
A nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan began at polling station No.396 at the Kazakh Embassy in Kyrgyzstan at 06:00 am Astana time (07:00 am local time), Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
Members of the election commission and Kazakh diplomats held a solemn opening ceremony.
300 Kazakhstanis were registered in Kyrgyzstan to vote in the referendum on the construction of the nuclear power plant. Most of them are included in the consular register. Kazakh students studying in Kyrgyzstan and nationals of Kazakhstan temporarily staying there were officially invited by phone to take part in the voting.
The voting will end at 08:00 pm local time.
As earlier reported, polling stations in Seoul and Tokyo were the first to open at 07:00 am local time.
The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, established the date of the referendum on the NPP for October 6, 2024, and inked a decree on its holding on September 2, 2024. Following this, a press conference was conducted at the Central Election Commission to discuss the national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power facility. Representatives of the Central Election Commission provided an explanation of the referendum's procedures during the conference.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated at the II Republican Forum of Deputies of Maslikhats of all levels held on October 3 that the referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant would be a turning point, irrespective of the voting results.
