Nuclear security issues discussed in St. Petersburg
Participants of the session discussed the agenda of the 37th plenary meeting of the CIS IPA scheduled on May 17.
In addition, improving of the CIS IPA interaction with the Council of the Heads of State and the Council of the CIS governments were in the limelight.
Nuclear security issues were the separate theme of negotiations. N. Nigmatulin noted Kazakhstan is the strong supporter and the active participant of the global process of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. Nigmatulin also stressed the world community highly appreciated Kazakh Presidents N. Nazarbayev's nuclear security initiatives.
"Last year Nazarbayev launched a string of such initiatives as an adoption of the Universal Declaration of Non-Nuclear World and the Nuclear Weapons Convention, signing of the universal treaty of total horizontal and vertical non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, establishing a global nuclear fuel bank under the International Atomic Energy Agency on Kazakhstan's territory," Majilis Speaker said.
The international conference "From nuclear tests prohibition to the world free of nuclear weapons" will be held on August 27-29 in Astana. Majilis, "Nazarbayev Center" public agency and the international organization ""Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament" involving more than 80 countries are the organizers of the conference.
N.Nigmatulin expressed confidence the CIS parliamentarians' participation would make the conference more meaningful, would further strengthen cooperation between the parliaments of the CIS member states in ensuring nuclear safety.
