OIC Sec Gen calls Islamic countries to support Kazakhstan’s initiative on announcing Aug 29 International Day of Nuclear Arms Renunciation
The address to 57 countries reads that the history of independent Kazakhstan is connected with nuclear disarmament. President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the Decree on closure of the Semipalatinsk test site in August 1991. Central Asian states under close cooperation with the UN signed Agreement on establishment of a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone in Central Asian region on September 8, 2006. Signing of the Agreement is a historical event that witnesses the commitment of these OIC member states to the principals of nuclear weapons non-proliferation and intention to contribute to the strengthening of the international security.
For the present moment Saudi Arabia and Sultan Omar expressed support to the initiative of the Kazakh Leader and readiness to discuss draft resolution of the UN General Assembly on the announcement of August 29 the International Day of Nuclear Arms Renunciation developed by the Kazakh side.
