OLZHABAI TOLYBAIULY (1709-1783/85) – the Kazakh warrior of the XVIII century, one of the commanders of the national liberation movement against the Dzungars, Abylai khan?s adherer. He came from the Argyn tribe of the Middle zhuz.

He was born in Akmola oblast. His father Tolybai died in 1723, and then 13-year-old Olzhabai was raised by his grandfather Karatai batyr. Olzhabai graduated from a madrasah in Turkestan, where he learned Arabic and Kalmyk languages. Russian scientists F.Sherbin, N.Konshin, N.Smirnova and D.Primak described in their works true facts on Olzhabai?s heroism mentioned in Kazakh legends. In the legends in the first battle he was a flag-bearer of Karatai batyr. Olzhabai was one of Abylai?s batyrs-flag-bearers, participated in liberation of Turkestan and Tashkent from the Dzungars, and protected the Kazakh lands in battles against foreign invaders. He fought together with such batyrs like Kabanbai, Bogenbai and MalaissaryIn many military campaigns . Olzhabai was a strong supporter of the centralized state power headed by Abylai khan. Olzhabai batyr was a good diplomat: his participation in the Kazakh-Chinese relationships of the middle of the XVIII century is significant. Great scientist Alkei Margulan is his great grandson, and poet-writer Olzhas Suleimenov - a descendant in the seventh generation of Olzhabai batyr.
