Only joint efforts of five countries can solve problems of Caspian Sea

ASTANA. November 9. KAZINFORM /Gulnara Zhandagulova/ The problem of Caspian Sea can be solved only by joint efforts of five countries; Minister of Environment Nurgali Ashimov has said today during the regional session on preparation of the Draft Protocol on protection of Caspian Sea from pollution.

The regional session of the experts from Caspian bordering countries on development of the Draft Protocols to the Framework Convention on Protection of Sea Environment of Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) is taking place in Astana on November, 9-12. The session is aimed at complete development of the draft protocol's texts to the Tehran Convention to prepare them to signing of the Tehran Convention at its 3rd Conference. The conference will be held in the capital of Kazakhstan in 2010 where signing of Astana Protocol will be also possible.

According to the Minister of Environment "only joint efforts of five countries can solve the problem of Caspian Sea".

The principal tools of the Tehran Convention are four protocols. According to N. Ashimov two protocols will be discussed today. Representatives of international institutes of all five countries as Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan arrived to discuss the problem.

The Draft Protocol on protection of Caspian Sea provides the responsibility of agreed sides on prevention and reduction of pollution for sea environment as well as the control over its state. Meanwhile, the Draft Protocol on the regional readiness, response and cooperation in case of incidents causing oil pollution provides the point on cooperation at the regional level, mainly by creation of the regional center.
