The voting, which started on Dec. 17 and was scheduled to end by Jan. 3, was extended by a day to 5 p.m. PT (0100 GMT, Jan. 5), the Academy said.

The online voting system will be shut down by two hours on Jan. 3 before it reopens at 7 p.m. PT (0300 GMT, Jan. 4) and remains available to members throughout the time frame.

"By extending the voting deadline we are providing every opportunity available to make the transition to online balloting as smooth as possible," said Ric Robertson, Academy chief operating officer.

This year marked the the first time when the Academy introduced the online voting system for its nearly 6,000 voting members.

To facilitate the procedure, the Academy set up several assisted voting stations in big cities including Los Angeles, New York and London. A 24-hour support call center was also put into use, according to the Academy. Voting members, as always, can still choose to submit a paper ballot, according to the rules.

The Academy will announce the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards on Jan. 10 and present the awards on Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, Hollywood, California.
