Oscars shortlist for 10 categories revealed

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists for 10 categories for the 97th Academy Awards, including the prestigious International Feature Film category. Unfortunately, the Kazakh film “Bauyryna Salu”, directed by Askhat Kuchinchirekov, did not make the cut, reports a Kazinform News Agency correspondent.

Among the 15 films advancing to the next round are entries from countries like France, Germany, Brazil and Senegal.

The debut film, which captured the top prize at Kazakhstan’s Tulpar Awards, was submitted for consideration after being selected by the Kazakh Oscar Committee. Reflecting on the process, Kuchinchirekov expressed pride in representing Kazakh cinema and shared his belief that the film deserves global recognition.

The International Feature Film category saw submissions from 85 countries and regions, with Academy members from all branches participating in the selection. Only those who met specific viewing requirements could vote, ensuring a rigorous evaluation process.

Despite the setback, “Bauyryna Salu” has highlighted the growing quality of Kazakh filmmaking on the international stage, showcasing the country’s rich storytelling traditions to a global audience.
