OSCE promotes environmental education in Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea area
The event gathered more than 30 participants, including schoolteachers, local administration officials and civil society representatives from the main cities of three regions in Western Kazakhstan - Aktau, Atyrau and Uralsk. They will discuss the role of young people in environmental protection and sustainable development, matters related to environmental ethics and raising ecological awareness, as well as participation in environmental governance, press service of the OSCE Centre in Astana reports.
During the event, experts will introduce the seminar participants to the Green Pack, an environmental education toolkit for secondary schools developed with the Centre's support and recommended for extra-curricular education by Kazakhstan's Education and Science Ministry. In interactive training sessions, participants will learn how to use the multi-media toolkit in their work.
Alexander Peytchev, the Economic and Environmental Officer of the OSCE Centre in Astana, said: "The Centre supports Kazakhstan's efforts to promote sustainable development, ensure sound environmental governance and enhance civil society's participation in environmental decision making. Raising the environmental awareness of young people is crucial for building an environment-friendly culture in order to successfully tackle challenges related to environmental security and climate change."
The workshop also marked the inauguration of the Aktau Aarhus Centre, which was established with OSCE Centre in Astana's support.
The event follows a series of OSCE Centre activities promoting sustainable development education and the implementation of the Aarhus Convention in Kazakhstan.
