Participants of Kursk battle honoured in Astana

KAZINFORM - As of today, 31 participants of Kursk battle live in Astana, this was one of the most important battles of the Great Patriotic War, this has been announced today at the round table in the honour of the 70th anniversary of Kursk battle. Today we’re holding a festive event dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Kursk battle, and honour the veterans of the Great Patriotic War, participants of Kursk battle. The battle at Kursk Salient became one of the most important stages on the way to the victory of the USSR over fascist Germany. For its scale, intensity and results it stands in the row of the largest battles of the World War II”, - told the deputy head of the Department of defense of Astana city, colonel Bakhtiyar Pernebekov.

Let us recall that Kursk battle lasted from July 5 to August 23, 1943, and over this period stiff battle of troops took place, the battle lasted 49 days. From both sides the battle involved over 4 million people, more than 69 000 guns and mortar-guns, over 13 000 tanks and assault guns, more than 12 000 aircrafts.

Akmola veterans, participants of Kursk battle were also honoured at the session. “Thousands of Akmola residents, who took part in the battle, contributed to the victory of the Soviet Army in Kursk battle. 70 years passed after the battle at Kursk Salient, it’s an anniversary date. The Department of defense of Astana city has its book of condolence published in 1994. The first book has 639 pages, there are names of 213 people who died and went missing. In total there are 8 books of condolence with about 200 names in each of them, and the whole publication reminds of 1600 Akmola residents, and if we add all the wounded the number will become more shocking”, - noted B.Pernebekov.

In total 7414 Akmola residents gave their lives for the victory during the war. Currently 31 ceterans of the Great Patriotic War, who participated in Kursk battle, live in Astana. The purpose of this event is patriotic education of the youth, and honouring the memory of all veterans of the war.
