Politico: Meloni is the most powerful person in Europe in 2025
The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is the most powerful person in Europe according to the American newspaper “Politico”, Agenzia Nova reports.
“If you are Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and a key advisor to the president-elect of the United States Donald Trump, the phone number you need to dial is Giorgia Meloni,” reads the motivation for the 2025 award.
“In less than a decade, the leader of the right-wing Fratelli d'Italia party has gone from being dismissed as the leader of an ultranationalist party, to being elected prime minister, becoming a contact person with whom Brussels, and now Washington, can connect.”
The newspaper recalls Meloni’s first steps in political adventure, from militancy in the “youth wing” of the Italian Social Movement, slowly arriving to conquer the center of the political scene. “Since her election in 2022, the Italian prime minister has addressed policies on issues such as migration and LGBTQ + rights, which once would have drawn condemnation from Brussels”.
As a result, many EU leaders have gone “from indifference to approval” of Meloni, ending up giving the occupant of Palazzo Chigi the profile of “representative of the increasingly radical zeitgeist that is emerging on both sides of the Atlantic”.
“Meloni made headlines around the world when she became Italy’s first female prime minister, but few predicted she would last long in office,” the US newspaper continues. Instead, “over the past two years, Meloni has consolidated her government as one of the most stable ever in postwar Italy,” while her “polished and practical” presentation “contributes to the image of stability.” A profile that also features an exchange of words with the president of the Campania region, Vincenzo De Luca. After he called her a “bitch,” Meloni showed up at an event in her region and greeted the opposition politician, reminding him that she was the “bitch.” “How are you?” she said.
