President and Germany's Chancellor discussed Zhanaozen riots

BERLIN. February 8. KAZINFORM /Marlan Zhiembay/ President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel have discussed the events in the town of Zhanaozen, Mangystau region.

Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has announced it at a press conference following the results of the negotiations with N.Nazarbayev.

"Today we can present significant results of our cooperation, including a partnership agreement in the raw, industrial and technological fields," A.Merkel said, noting, that there are great opportunities for bringing economic relations between Kazakhstan and Germany to a higher level.

According to her, during the negotiations with N.Nazarbayev there was outlined importance of an agreement on dual education in higher educational institutions.

"We talked about necessity of restructuring of the Kazakhstani banks, as well as about Kazakhstan's foreign policy and human rights," A.Merkel said.

She emphasized that the parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan, which have been recently held, were fair and open.

"We have discussed riots in Zhanaozen, in which the unemployed died. I have backed the Kazakh President's intention to approve the work of the investigative committee, which will substantiate all the circumstances of the events occurred there.

We support Kazakhstan in its intention to sign a treaty with the European Union. We also want the further development of not only the Kazakh-German relations, but Kazakhstan's interaction with the European Union," A.Merkel noted.
