President receives Supreme Judicial Council Chairman Denis Shipp

Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has received the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Denis Shipp, Kazinform News Agency reports citing the press service of Akorda.

The President was reported about the results of the Supreme Judicial Council’s activity in 2023, the condition of the country’s judicial corps and plans for the upcoming period.

According to Denis Shipp, last year, the Council fulfilled a number of tasks set by the country’s leadership, related to the institutional strengthening and the work on training of potential judges, upgrading their qualification, prolongation of maximum age, as well as suspension and termination of judges' duties.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was informed about the Counsil’s work on improvement of the procedure of judges selection, ensuring its transparency and effectiveness.

Thanks to the measures adopted, the number of new judges keeps rising, said Shipp. In 2023, the number of persons recommended for the appointment as judges exceeded the number of judges who quit the judicial system by 32. The number female judges exceeds the number of male judges by 172. The judges’ average age is 46, while the average length of service in the judicial system is 13 years. To ensure transparency of recruitment, an online broadcast of recruitment procedures has been introduced.

Upon completion of the meeting, the President tasked the Supreme Judicial Council to continue the work on effective implementation of the reforms aimed at strengthening the judges’ independence and their quality recruitment.
