Reconstruction of Karaganda-Balkhash highway officially comes to an end

The Karaganda-Balkhash highway of republican significance officially reopens after almost 5 years of reconstruction works in one of its segments, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

The highway segment spanning 363km forms an important part of the Center-South strategic transport corridor (Astana-Karaganda-Almaty), connecting the country’s north and south. It’s also a major transit route used to connect Kazakhstan with Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Reconstruction works are supposed to boost transit, passenger flow and tourism.

The project involved the construction of 11 bridges, 32 overpasses for agricultural vehicles, three transport junctions, one railroad overpass. Under the project’s implementation, around four million tons of asphalt concrete mixtures were used, reads a statement of the national company KazAvtoJol.

The company added that 18 platforms of rest, 24 bus stops were improved and 1,452 lightning poles were installed.

Traffic density in the highway segment reaches 18,000 vehicles per day, set to rise to up to 25,000 in summer.

Medium repairs were also completed in 123 kilometers of other republican roads, including Kataganda-Ayagoz-Tarbagatay-Bugaz, Akshatau-Agadyr-Ortau, Kyzylorda-Pavlodar-Uspenka and Bastau-Aktau-Temirtau.

The national company KazAvtoJol eyes reconstruction of Karaganda-Zhezkazgan road with a length of 513 kilometers in 2025 with the use of the EPCM mechanism (engineering, procurement, construction, management).
