Reduction in number of universities should not turn into a mechanic process, N. Nazarbayev

ASTANA. November 26. KAZINFORM Today Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev has received Education and Science Minister Bakhytzhan Zhumagulov, the Kazakh President's press service said.

The meeting focused on the progress of implementation of the tasks set in line with the state-run education development program, the state and prospects for the development of science and education.

Zhumagulov underlined that for the past two years education funding has doubled.

"For the past 10 years the number of kindergartens has increased sevenfold. 70% of children attend preschool facilities. The number of schools that need repair decreased by 20%. For the said period of time Kazakhstan built about 400 schools. Thus, we create conditions for a transfer to 12-year education," the Minister added.

He also briefed on higher education.The number of youth engaged in science reached 18 000. For the past two and a half years about 3 000 young scientists graduated from the country's and foreign educational establishments joined pursuing science. 57% of the country's universities are engaged in research. The number of higher educational institutions reduced from 149 to 139 so far.

"Reduction in number of universities should not turn into a mechanic process. All criteria, as well as the quality of teaching, research activities should be taken into account," President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.
