Russia lays down 5th Yasen-class submarine
The submarine dubbed the Arkhangelsk will be the fifth Yasen-class multipurpose submarine, which the Sevmash shipyard is building.
The first Yasen-class submarine, the Severodvinsk, was built at Sevmash and handed over to the Russian Navy in June 2014.
"The multipurpose nuclear-powered submarines dubbed Kazan, Novosibirsk and Krasonyarsk are under construction at the Severodvinsk shipyard under the improved 885M Yasen M project. The project's changes relate to the component base of electronic warfare systems, modernized equipment and materials, which will be supplied solely by Russian producers," the Sevmash shipyard's press office said.
Under the Russian naval doctrine, Yasen-class submarines will make the backbone of Russia's multipurpose nuclear submarine fleet.
The Sevmash shipyard will build eight Yasen-class nuclear submarines fitted out with cruise missiles in accordance with Russia's state armaments program until 2020.
