SEOUL. May 10. KAZINFORM South Korea, the United States and Japan are eyeing a first-ever joint military exercise, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

''The three countries shared a common understanding for closer military cooperation amid North Korea's mounting threats to make provocations,'' a South Korean government official said in a report by the JoongAng Ilbo.

The official said South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan Jin, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura will discuss the issue at a meeting in Singapore to be held on the sidelines of an Asian security forum on June 1-3, Kyodo reports.
