Scandal: Ex-Zhanaozen mayor cuffed once again

ASTANA. August 3. KAZINFORM According to Express K newspaper, former akim (mayor) of Zhanaozen city was handcuffed again right at the courtroom by the decision of appeal judicial panel.

The newspaper notes that ex-mayor of Zhanaozen Orak Sarbopeyev was under an accusation of squandering KZT 109 million, abuse of power, theft of funds allotted on social and economic support of the population and oil and gas sphere employees through community funds 'Zhanashyr' and 'Zharylkau'. The former head of the city was declared not guilty by verdict of the jury on June 23, 2012 and set free.

The Prosecutor's Office of Mangystau region, however, lodged an appeal in early July. Prosecutor Talgat Abubakirov accused Orak Sarbopeyev of bribery while being the mayor of Zhanaozen. The appeal judicial panel of Mangystau region submitted the materials as regards Sarbopeyev's case to the Supreme Court. The suspect has been arrested.
