Scholz and Trump discuss European security and Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday to discuss European security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, reports a Kazinform News Agency correspondent. Both leaders emphasized the importance of working toward a “fair, just, and sustainable peace” as quickly as possible.
In a statement, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said: “The focus of the conversation was on the security policy challenges in Europe.”
Scholz reiterated Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, underscoring its defense needs amid the prolonged conflict.
The phone call took place while Scholz attended the European Council summit in Brussels, where leaders addressed the EU’s global role and discussed the implications of potentially reduced U.S. support for Ukraine during Trump’s upcoming term.
This was the second recent conversation between Scholz and Trump. Their earlier call in November, shortly after Trump’s reelection, also centered on the conflict in Ukraine, with both leaders agreeing to prioritize efforts to restore peace in Europe.
