Sharp poverty growth in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan

WASHINGTON. February 19. KAZINFORM /Aliya Altyngazina/ The global economic crisis has led to sharp increase of poverty in 40% of 107 developing countries of the world.

According to the World Bank?s report, among these countries are Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The latter was included in list of the countries with higher level of poverty, Kazinform reports. As a result of a weak economic growth in 2009 the number of the people living on USD 1.25 per day will increase by 46 mln, the report reads. The number of the people whose income comprises USD 2 per day will reach 53 mln. High prices for food and fuel in 2008 led to poverty of about 130-155 mln people. Such tendency creates serious threat to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by the world community by 2015.
