South Korea urges international community to condemn North Korea over attack on Korean Peninsula
"First, I would like to express my gratitude to President of Kazakhstan for excellent chairmanship and warm hospitality. Taking this opportunity I would like to pay tribute to Kazakhstan Government for its efforts to strengthen cooperation of the OSCE participating states and deepening relations between the OSCE participating states and partner countries.
This meeting serves as a timely opportunity for the OSCE participating states to address new, modern threats and challenges environment of the 21st century. I hope that the OSCE states will reaffirm the values, principles of the Organization and its commitments.
Since 1994 when the Republic of Korea joined this community of the partners for cooperation Korea has steadily enhanced mutual understanding and cooperation between the North-East Asia and Europe through various gatherings, conferences. As the partner for cooperation the Republic of Korea will continue actively participating in West-East cooperation dialogue including the Corfu process", the Korean FM said.
Besides, Mr. Kim Sung-Hwan raised the issue of attack on the Korean Peninsula which occurred on November 23, 2010.
"On Tuesday, November 23 North Korean military forces initiated an unprovoked attack on our island by firing artillery shoots. Four people were killed as a result of this attack including two innocent civilians. Many more were injured. This is a clear violation of the UN Charter, an agreement on reconciliation and agreement in force between the two Koreas.
The international community needs to condemn North Korea and urge it in strongest terms to refrain from such actions", he stressed.
