Strong quake shakes Mexico again

MEXICO CITY. April 12. KAZINFORM A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico's western state of Michoacan on Wednesday following two major tremors in the Latin American country in the past 30 days, according to RIA Novosti.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on its web site that the quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) near the town of Lazaro Cardenas at 17:55 local time (22:55 GMT). No casualties or serious structural damage have been reported so far.

A RIA Novosti correspondent reported from Mexico City that the tremor was felt in the capital, which is located 384 km (238 miles) from the epicenter, and caused a moderate panic among the residents.

People rushed from buildings into the streets, keeping as far away from the walls as possible.

Authorities deployed helicopters to assess the potential damage to the city's infrastructure.

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said there had been no major interruptions in the work of key communal or transportation services in the capital.

The U.S.-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami warning.

It is the third strong earthquake to hit Mexico in less than a month. A 7.4-magnitude tremor on March 20 , which was followed by a series of aftershocks, damaged at least 32,000 buildings in the southwest of the country.
