Taraz joins EU energy initiative «Covenant of Mayors»

During the event, it is planned to carry out an official signing ceremony of "Covenant of Mayors" in the city of Taraz. Bekbolat Orynbekov, the Akim of Taraz, will sign the document from the Kazakh side and the Ambassador, Head of EU Delegation to Kazakhstan Aurelia Bouchez will signt it from the European side.
As the senior expert of the Energy Charter Secretariat Kanat Botbayev noted, DACO project is to promote sustainable energy development in the large cities within the European initiative "Covenant of Mayors". As part of the agreement, the city takes on a commitment to sustainable energy enhancement, reduction of carbon emissions, development of renewable energy sources and promotion of energy efficiency.
The implementation of the project will establish in Taraz a system of energy savings, contribute to the creation of skilled and sustainable jobs , improve the environment and quality of life, increase economic competitiveness and will allow for greater energy independence.
"Covenant of Mayors" is a European cooperation movement involving local and regional authorities. Signatories of the Covenant of Mayors voluntarily commit to increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources on their territories. By their commitment, they support the EU 20% CO2 reduction objective to be reached by 2020.
After the European Union climate and energy package was adopted in 2008, the European Commission launched the Covenant of Mayors to endorse and support the efforts deployed by local authorities in the implementation of sustainable energy policies.
Currently, about 5,000 mayors, representing more than 175 million people have signed the agreement.
