The UN Scholars in Disarmament visited Kazakhstan

ASTANA. September 25. KAZINFORM On September 21-24, the UN scholarship holders in disarmament visited Kazakhstan.

The program was established in 1978 is held annually for young diplomats from 25 countries and covers disarmament and non-proliferation issues. Within 9-10 weeks, the group of the program students and organizers visit various countries such as Germany, China, Switzerland, Japan, etc, and various international organizations as the IAEA, the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban TreatyOrganization (CTBTO), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

This year, the group of scholar visited Kazakhstan. The visit was hosted by Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry jointly with the Ministry for Industry and New Technologies. As part of the curriculum they visited the city of Kurchatov, where they got acquainted with National Nuclear Center activities, and territory of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

While in Astana the group met with representatives of Kazakhstan's Nuclear Society, and visited «Astana Solar» photovoltaic modules production facility.

They also participated in the debates on disarmament and non-proliferation held at the Foreign Ministry. They were acquainted with the history of nuclear testing at the Semipalatinsk test site, Kazakhstan's contribution to the nuclear disarmament, as well as new initiatives in this sphere.
