In an exclusive interview with Silk Way TV channel, UN Secretary General António Guterres discussed the SCO summit, which is set to take place in Astana on July 3–4, as well as Kazakhstan's role within the UN and future prospects of this cooperation, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres met with heads of UN agencies and UN Resident Coordinator in Kazakhstan Michaela Friberg-Storey at the UN Plaza in Almaty during his visit to the country.

"There was a very important investment of Kazakhstan for the UN to have proper capacity to act here. There are plans in relation to a regional dimension, especially linked to the SDGs, and it will depend on the General Assembly, but I will be fully committed to try to help these things happen.

Kazakhstan is very active in the bodies of the UN, in the Economic and Social Council, for instance. Kazakhstan has played a very important role in all the discussions that are taking place in the preparation of the Summit of the Future, the New Agenda for Peace, the Global Digital Compact, the questions of an emergency platform to respond to the dramatic impact of natural disasters, conflicts, pandemics, for which we still are unprepared.

I could go on and on in areas where the voice of Kazakhstan in the UN is extremely important. On the other hand, I think we need to recognize that when Kazakhstan acts in favor of peace, when Kazakhstan acts in bringing together parties in conflict in order to solve their problems, when Kazakhstan is this honest broker in international affairs, Kazakhstan becomes a very important instrument of the objectives of the UN," the UN Secretary-General emphasized.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana on July 4.
