Third airport construction in Istanbul stopped upon court decision

ISTANBUL. KAZINFORM - The construction of the third airport in Istanbul, which was expected to become one of the biggest one in the world, was stopped upon the decision of the City Court, Turkish newspaper Milliyet reported on Feb. 11.

This decision was taken after the residents of nearby districts filed a lawsuit in the court, in which they demanded to stop the airport construction, according to trend.az. The operations were stopped due to a serious damage caused to the environment, according to Istanbul court's decision. An agreement on construction of the third airport in Istanbul was signed in Turkey in May 2013. A document was signed between the Ministry of Transport, Shipping and Communications of Turkey and the Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon Consortium, which won the tender for the construction of the airport. The Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon consortium won the tender for the project on May 3, 2013, offering 22.1 billion Euros for the project. The third airport in Istanbul was under construction near Lake Terkos in the north of the city. Earlier, the Air Transport Department of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Shipping and Communications told Trend that the construction of the third airport in Istanbul would cost 10 billion Lira. The ministry also said the airport will be able to serve 90 million people a year initially. In future, this figure will increase to 150 million.
