Three human metapneumovirus cases detected in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region

Since the beginning of the current epidemic season, three human metapneumovirus cases have been confirmed in Karaganda region, while acute respiratory infection cases neared 58,000 since last October 1, Kazinform News Agency.

57,549 ARVI cases were recorded since October 1, 2024, of which 58% or 33,270 cases fall on children under 14 that is 5.9% less compared to the same period of the previous year, Karaganda region’s sanitary doctors said.

37% of 875 samples were tested positive for non-influenza respiratory viruses. Rhinovirus is the most frequently detected virus in the region up to 34%, followed by PV virus up to 24%, seasonal coronavirus up to 18.4% and human metapneumovirus up to 0.9%, deputy head of the sanitary and epidemiological control department of Karaganda region Gulzhan Baituganova said.

She added 16 human metapneumovirus cases were reported in the 2023-2024 epidemic season in the region.

Human metapneumovirus spreads like other respiratory viruses from those infected through sneezing and coughing. Its many symptoms are coughing, runny nose, fever and headache.

It was earlier reported that human metapneumovirus strains were detected in Kazakhstan.
