Tokayev attended international conference on nuclear safety in Fukushima

Forum participants were foreign ministers of 10 countries, members of the government of more than 100 countries, and heads of international organizations. The United Nations was represented by Deputy Secretary-General Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, who read out a message from Ban Ki-moon.
In his speech, Mr. Tokayev, who is also Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament, emphasized the continuing importance of the decree of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev on the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. The date of signing of this historic document (29 August 1991) was declared by the United Nations as the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
According to the Deputy Secretary-General, it was an interstate document, signed by the head of one of the republics of the former Soviet Union, which for the first time in the history of international relations has acquired a global significance. Tokayev said that Kazakhstan has made a tremendous contribution to the non-proliferation regime, what is the invaluable achievement of the Head of State.
