Toshiba ends domestic TV production, more focus on overseas

TOKYO. May 17. KAZINFORM Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it has terminated domestic output of televisions to restructure its money-losing TV business and transfer production overseas amid shrinking sales in Japan and the company's increasing focus on emerging markets.

The producer of Regza brand TV sets has stopped operations at its sole domestic TV manufacturing plant in Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture, it said. The plant was once Toshiba's mainstay TV plant after starting operation in 1965, Kyodo reports.

''Though I feel very uneasy about terminating the production at the Fukaya plant, it was difficult to continue (the output) if it weighed on our business,'' President Norio Sasaki told a news conference in Tokyo.
