Toyota to build experimental eco-friendly hydrogen cell-powered city

Toyota President Akio Toyoda unveiled the project, to be built in Shizuoka Prefecture, at a press preview event ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Kyodo News reports.
Called the Woven City, it will be a fully connected ecosystem powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Ground is scheduled to be broken in early 2021, according to the Japanese automaker.
«I believe it is up to all of us, especially corporations like Toyota, to do our part to help make the world a better place. This Woven City is one small, but hopefully significant step toward fulfilling that promise,» Toyoda said.
The new community will be built on a 175-acre site at the foot of Mt. Fuji, starting with a population of around 2,000. In the city, only fully-autonomous, zero-emission vehicles will be allowed to travel on main streets.
