Transdniestrian CEC promises to announce results of presidential polls Dec 16
On that day the commission plans to consider incumbent President Igor Smirnov's complaint, in which he demands that the results of the election be declared null and void.
The Central Election Commission postponed the announcement of the results of the election due to "numerous complaints from candidates and voters", commission spokesman Dmitry Matveyev said.
Smirnov requested that the results of the December 11 presidential election in the region be annulled.
He filed his appeal to the Central Election Commission on Monday, December 12.
However Russian and CIS observers see no reasons for annulling the results of the December 11 presidential elections in Transdniestria as its leader Igor Smirnov insists, observers from the Federation of Peace and Accord said.
"There are no reasons to conclude that the distortions are such that they make the elections invalid," Vilyam Smirnov of the Coordination Council for the Protection of People's Election Rights said.
According to preliminary information, Transdniestrian Parliament Speaker Anatoly Kaminsky and former Parliament Speaker Yevgeny Shevchuk received 38.5 and 26.4 percent of votes respectively will compete in the runoff election, leaving Smirnov overboard with 24.8 percent.
"This result shows that people in Transdniestria are tired of the present leadership and supported the policy of social and economic reforms and the revival of the republic," Shevchuk told Itar-Tass.
If elected, Shevchuk promised to do his best in order to "restore the Russian leadership's trust"; Kazinform cites Itar-Tass.
