Trump orders declassification of documents on JFK, RFK and MLK assassinations
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an order to declassify the remaining classified documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
Despite the events occurring more than 50 years ago, a significant portion of the records has remained inaccessible. The U.S. President emphasized that their families and the public deserve transparency and truth, and releasing these documents serves the national interest.
The 1992 John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act required the full disclosure of these materials by October 2017, except in cases where the president certifies that their release could harm national security or diplomatic relations. Temporary delays had been authorized under presidents Trump and Biden to allow further review of the redacted documents.
The U.S. President has now declared that further withholding of these records is against the public interest and that the time has come for their full disclosure, including documents related to the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., which were not previously mandated by law.
According to the order, within 15 days, the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General, in coordination with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and the Counsel to the President, must present a plan for the full release of records related to President John F. Kennedy's assassination.
Within 45 days, they are to review records related to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and present a plan for their complete disclosure.
The assassinations of John F. Kennedy in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. in April 1968, and Robert F. Kennedy in June 1968 remain among the most significant and controversial events in U.S. history, sparking numerous conspiracy theories and debates. Official investigations concluded that John F. Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, Martin Luther King Jr. by James Earl Ray, and Robert F. Kennedy by Sirhan Sirhan.
Earlier, Kazinform News Agency reported that U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of the Stargate project, aimed at investing up to $500 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure development across the United States.
