Nineteen years ago on December 13, 1993, President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Vice President Al Gore signed an agreement that provided for United States assistance in the ultimate destruction of Kazakhstan's nuclear weapons arsenal.

This bilateral agreement was signed within the framework of the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program enacted 20 years ago this month, Kazinform has learnt from the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan.

Since President Nazarbayev renounced nuclear weapons, Kazakhstan has been a world leader in the area of nuclear non-proliferation, and a staunch supporter of all countries' efforts to secure nuclear materials and safeguard against nuclear threats.

This cooperation fits into the strategic partnership with the United States in a myriad of areas and demonstrates Kazakhstan's determination to be a leader on the world stage.
