The attacker, identified as Michael McLendon, first burned down his mother's home in Winston, near the Alabama-Florida state line. The woman, whose body was found inside the house, had been shot. Another victim of the shooting was the wife of a sheriff's deputy and her 3-month-old child who lived in a house across the street. The gunman later traveled to the nearby town of Samson, in Geneva County, where he killed his grandfather, grandmother, uncle and aunt in front of their house, the New York Daily News said. "He was just driving down the street shooting at people sitting on their porches," said state Sen. Harri Anne Smith said. McLendon later killed a woman at a Big-Little Store service station and a man outside the Samson Pipe and Supply store. Several other people including police were wounded; Kazinform cites RIA Novosti. He then went to the Reliable Metal Products plant in Geneva where he killed himself. Local officials said he was a former employee of the plant. McLendon's motive for the shootings has yet to be established.
