UEFA and Europol join forces to fight crime in football

The European Union police agency is expected to share information on suspected fixing and illegal betting withUEFA and its 54 member federations. The memorandum was signed on Tuesday in Nyon by UEFA President Michel Platini and the director of Europol, Rob Wainwright, the euronews said. Platini said: "With the development of football and the development of betting activities around football, that brought into play a lot of money and people interested by that money. But we cannot lead the investigation with our UEFA employees any more, we need a police, people taking care of that. I have been asking for that since 2007, as I became President, I wanted to have a Sports Police." Europol has a sports corruption unit comprising of 15 EU members and two other countries. The agency says it is currently involved in nine investigations linked to match-fixing although no further details have been given.
