UN appeals for $7.7 mln for Tajikistan

NEW-YORK. August 13. KAZINFORM /Aliya Altyngazina/ The United Nations appealed for donor aid to help Tajikistan to recover from floods and mudflows. The Government of Tajikistan addressed to the UN with the corresponding request.  

Twenty-six people were killed as a result of heavy rains in April and May in Tajikistan this year whereas over 3 thousand people were displaced. More than 2 thousand houses, hospitals, schools and other buildings were destroyed during six weeks.

The Government has to solve the problem of proper housing for over 2 thousand people before December. Supplies of essential medicines and school materials need to be replenished. Some 20,000 people still need access to drinking water.

At present the Government of Tajikistan needs USD 7.7 mln for implementation of 18 urgent projects.
