Unique medieval tower collapses in Kazakhstan’s Turkistan region

A part of the Akbikesh unique medieval tower collapsed in Turkistan region, Kazinform News Agency reports.

The Akbikesh Tower located in Sozak district was built in the XII-XIII centuries. Standing atop the mount it has been preserved for more than six centuries. However, rain and meltwater caused the partial collapse of the historical monument.

The akimat of Sozak district appealed to the regional culture department.

The Akbikesh Tower is inscribed in the list of monuments of republican significance of the Kazakh Culture and Sports Ministry. In 2020 the restoration works were conducted at the site. On January 25-26, the tower suffered damage due to bad weather conditions.

As earlier reported, in 2024r, the scientific restoration of 33 monuments, of which nine are mausoleums, including mausoleums of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Asan-ata, Okshy-ata, Shokai Datka, Suinbay Aronuly, Syrlytam and Zhusip-ata, have been approved at the expense of the republican budget.
