U.S. aims to purchase Greenland: New "Make Greenland Great Again" bill introduced
Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced a bill titled the "Make Greenland Great Again Act," which seeks authorization for negotiations to purchase Greenland from Denmark, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
The bill, spearheaded by Republican Representatives Andy Ogles and Diana Harshbarger, proposes that the United States begin formal discussions with Denmark regarding Greenland's acquisition as soon as President Trump assumes office on January 20, 2025. Supporters of the legislation argue that acquiring Greenland would bolster U.S. strategic influence and secure control over a vital geopolitical region.
The idea of purchasing Greenland, first proposed by Trump in 2019, has gained renewed momentum following his second electoral victory. Although Denmark previously rejected the offer, Trump has not ruled out the use of military or economic leverage to persuade Copenhagen to transfer the island to the United States.
Under the proposed bill, if enacted, the president would be authorized to initiate negotiations with Denmark. Any agreements reached would need to be submitted to Congress within five days of their conclusion.
However, any transfer of sovereignty would require the consent of Greenland's government and its people, respecting their right to self-determination. The acquisition of territory involves complex legal processes under international law, including treaties and agreements that must be negotiated and ratified by all parties involved.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953, when it was redefined as a district of Denmark. In 2009, Greenland was granted expanded autonomy, providing it with greater authority over its internal affairs.
