US extends Green Card renewal validity to 3 years

Starting September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has automatically extended the validity of Green Cards to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who submit Form I-90, the Application to Replace a Permanent Resident Card, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports, citing Visaguide.

Lawful permanent residents who properly file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card may receive this extension. Form I-90 receipt notices had previously provided a 24-month extension of the validity of a Green Card. This extension is expected to help applicants who experience longer processing times, because they will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status as they await their renewed Green Card.

Additionally, if a green card holder has lost their document and needs confirmation of their lawful permanent resident status while waiting for a new card, they can request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact Center. After filing Form I-90, they may be issued an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp to confirm their status.

A Green Card is a document, officially called a Permanent Resident Card, that certifies the right of a foreign national to permanently reside and work in the United States of America. However, a Green Card does not grant citizenship, and its holders do not have the right to vote in elections. In the meantime, a Green Card holder can apply for citizenship through the naturalization process.

According to the Cato Institute, only three percent of applicants will be able to obtain the document in 2024. In fiscal year 2023, 930 people from Kazakhstan received US citizenship. According to the Annual Review of the Investment Immigration in the USA for 2023, the number of recipients of US passports decreased slightly in CIS countries compared to 2022.
