Uzbekistan joins World Health Organization tobacco treaty

TASHKENT. April 26. KAZINFORM Uzbek President Islam Karimov has signed into law a global treaty which aims to cut tobacco use and its huge impact on public health, according to local media Wednesday, according to Xinhua.

The law ratifying the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) was passed by the lower house of parliament on March 6 and was ratified by the Senate on March 23.

The WHO FCTC was adopted by the World Health Assembly on May 21, 2003 and entered into force on Feb. 27, 2005. It has since become one of the most rapidly and widely embraced treaties in United Nations' history, with 174 parties to date.
