Astana's fate as the host city of the grandiose international exhibition was decided by the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE) at the 152nd session of its General Assembly by secret voting.

Astana's bid got the majority of votes from the BIE member countries surpassing the city of Liege, Belgium.

In his address, the Head of State stressed the decision on holding the EXPO-2017 event in Astana was indeed a historic one.

"During this event [EXPO] all countries strive to showcase their best technological, scientific and cultural achievements. Millions of people from dozens of countries attend such events. Astana's victory is not a fluke. In the first place, this is a recognition that our capital deserves to host the event of such level. Secondly, Astana's election bears evidence of high appreciation of Kazakhstan's success and underlines the prospects of its development. Thirdly, the topic chosen by Astana - 'The Energy of Future' - is a relevant one. And last but definitely not least, Astana's triumph is the result of hard work of all people of Kazakhstan," President Nazarbayev said.

"Now we need to hold the EXPO event at a high level. The exhibition will put the country to the test and, hopefully, will unlock our creative potential. EXPO-2017 in Astana will give an impetus to innovative development of the country," the Kazakh Leader emphasized.

Nursultan Nazarbayev is confident Kazakhstan will rise to the occasion and will host EXPO-2017 in the best possible way.
