Western Canada hit by snowstorm, thousands without power

VANCOUVER. KAZINFORM - A spokeswoman for British Columbia (BC) Hydro said thousands of residents in the province were still without power on Tuesday, a day after a snowstorm lashed the region.

The winter storm left as much as 40 cm of snow in some areas, while schools and highways closed. Classes were supposed to resume on Monday after the winter break. According to BC Hydro spokeswoman Simi Heer, icy conditions and closed roads made efforts to restore power difficult, and as of Tuesday morning, over 2,000 residents in the west coast area and over 1,000 customers in the Interior were without power, according to www.ubalert.com.

Almost three dozen warnings were till in effect on Tuesday about rainfall, snowstorms and extreme cold throughout the province, except for Metro Vancouver and the South Coast. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation warned that high winds and moderate snow are increasing the risk of avalanche.
