WHO's top TB official Mario Raviglione says hundreds of thousands of people around the world will die from multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis unless greater efforts are made to contain the dizease.

Raviglione told reporters in Geneva on Wednesday that some countries in eastern Europe are successfully reducing infection rates with aggressive treatment programs.

But he says many countries aren't doing proper surveillance for MDR-TB, let alone providing proper treatment.

WHO says some 25,000 people are being diagnosed each year with an even more dangerous form called extensive drug-resistant TB. Kazinform cites Arab News. See www.arabnews.com
