World Press Photo 2014 exhibition travels to İstanbul
Set to run until Sept. 2 in İstanbul, the World Press Photo 2014 exhibition features 140 photographs that won various prizes in eight different categories such as General News, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Nature and Sports in this year's competition, the results of which were announced on Feb. 14. This is the sixth year in a row that Forum İstanbul is hosting the annual traveling exhibition. The 2014 exhibition first opened in its hometown of Amsterdam, at De Nieuwe Kerk, on April 18, and is slated to travel to more than 100 cities in 45 countries throughout the year. Dutch Consul General in İstanbul Robert Schuddeboom is expected to speak at the İstanbul exhibition's opening ceremony, set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The show will go on public display on Wednesday. French photographer William Daniels, who won second place in the General News Stories category with his work "Chaos in Central African Republic," will also make introductory remarks at Tuesday's opening event, Today's Zaman reports. Launched in 1955 by the Amsterdam-based non-profit organization World Press Photo, the contest is billed as the world's largest and most prestigious annual press photography competition. The 140 prize-winning photos in the 57th World Press Photo Contest were selected from over 98,000 submissions by more than 5,700 photographers from around the world.
